Applications Invited for Dennis W. Jahnigen Career Development Scholars Awards

Deadline: December 5, 2006

Administered by the American Geriatrics Society ( http://www.americangeriatrics.org/ ), the Dennis W. Jahnigen Career Development Scholars Program offers two-year career development awards to support junior faculty in the specialties of anesthesiology, emergency medicine, general surgery, gynecology, ophthalmology, orthopaedic surgery, otolaryngology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, thoracic surgery, and urology. The award is intended to allow individuals to initiate and ultimately sustain a career in research and education in the geriatrics aspects of their discipline.

Each grant will provide two-year support of $150,000 ($75,000 per year) for salary and fringe benefits and/or the costs of doing research. In 2005, due to funding guidelines from the supporting foundations, the program instituted a requirement that each scholar's institution provide a minimum match of $25,000 per year. Up to eleven awards will be given in 2007.

Nominations are to be made by the individual's departmental chair. While more than one application may be submitted by Hopkins, only one application can come from each of the departments listed. Each Department Director must select their department's nominee; there will be no internal selection process coordinated by the institution.

To be eligible, a candidate must be a physician who is a U.S. citizen or permanent resident; be certified or board eligible to practice in one of the targeted specialties; have a primary academic appointment in a U.S. institution in one of the eligible specialty departments; and have completed his/her training (residency and/or fellowship) on or after June 30, 1997. Visit the American Geriatrics Society Web site (http://www.american
geriatrics.org/hartford/jahnigenPF.shtml
) for complete program information.

Applications Invited for Julie Martin Mid-Career Award in Aging Research Program

Deadline: December 15, 2006

Sponsored by the Ellison Medical Foundation and administered by the American Federation for Aging Research, the Julie Martin Mid-Career Award in Aging Research program supports outstanding mid-career scientists who have not been engaged in aging research but whose research is relevant and could lead to novel approaches to aging. Also eligible are aging researchers whose research is high risk and thus not attractive to NIH or other traditional sources but has the potential for high payoff in advancing our understanding of basic aging.

Two four-year awards of $550,000 each will be awarded.

The applicant must be an associate professor who achieved tenured status after December 1, 2003. Non-tenured associate professors at institutions with tenure are not eligible. Applicants at institutions that do not offer tenure must demonstrate that their appointment is equivalent to that of a tenured associate professor.

The proposed research must be conducted at any type of not-for-profit setting in the United States. Applicants who are employees in the NIH Intramural program are not eligible. More than one application per institution is permitted, but your application must be submitted through the Office of Research Administration. Complete application instructions are available here: http://www.afar.org/Ellison%20Mid-Career.html.
