Research topics should address social and behavioral issues in the prevention, care, and/or treatment of HIV/AIDS. NICHD has committed $2.5 million, NIA has committed $1 million, and NIMH has committed $500,000. It is anticipated that 7-11 awards will be made. The complete RFA is available at the NIH website located at: http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-HD-06-007.html#PartI NIH will allow Hopkins to submit one proposal for this program. If you are interested in this funding opportunity, please submit a brief program summary by Monday, September 18, 2006 so that we may determine whether and internal selection through the Provosts office is required. Deadline: October 31, 2006 L'Oreal USA has announced the start of the application period for its L'Oreal USA Fellowships for Women in Science program. This national program aims to annually recognize, reward, and support five women post-doctoral researchers in the United States who are pursuing careers in the life and physical/material sciences, as well as mathematics, engineering, and computer science. Other fields that are eligible are: immunology; all areas of chemistry; earth science and medical research. As part of its commitment to further help exceptional women scientists reach their goals, L'Oreal USA has doubled the value of its fellowship grants from a current $20,000 to $40,000 for the 2007 program. The five beneficiaries of the 2007 L'Oreal USA Fellowships for Women in Science will be invited to attend a week of events that include an awards ceremony, professional development workshops, media training, and networking opportunities. In 2007, these workshops, developed and facilitated by the American Association for the Advancement of Science will encompass job search techniques, interviewing skills, and strategies for peer review publication. The L'Oreal USA Fellowships for Women in Science program is open to women post-doctoral researchers only. Candidates interested in applying may visit

Deadline: December 15, 2006 The major goal of the American Federation for Aging Research ( http://www.afar.org ) Research Grants program is to assist in the development of the careers of junior investigators committed to pursuing careers in the field of aging research. AFAR provides up to $60,000 for a one- to two-year award to junior faculty (M.D.s and Ph.D.s) to do research that will serve as the basis for longer term research efforts. A typical successful applicant will be serving in his or her first or second year of a junior faculty appointment. AFAR funds research projects concerned with understanding the basic mechanisms of aging. Projects investigating age-related diseases are also supported, especially if approached from the point of view of how basic aging processes may lead to these outcomes. Projects concerning mechanisms underlying common geriatric functional disorders are also encouraged, as long as these include connections to fundamental problems in the biology of aging.
