Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Awards Program 2007

RESPONSE NEEDED BY Monday, September 18, 2006.

This program was designed to provide funding to faculty in the early stages of their careers with an independent body of scholarship, a commitment to education, and the promise of continuing outstanding contributions to both research and teaching. Nominees must hold a full-time tenure-track academic appointment, and be within the first five years of their independent academic careers. The Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award provides a $75,000 unrestricted research grant, usually over a five year period.

Once again this year, Hopkins may submit one nomination for this award program. Therefore, an internal peer review to select our nominees will be managed through the Provost's Office.

Required materials for internal review:
1. JHU Internal Submission Cover Sheet
2. Research plan (3-5 pages, single spaced, not including figures and references)
3. Curriculum Vitae (2-4 pages)
4. A letter of recommendation from the candidate's department head

Full program information can be obtained on the Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Awards Program website located at: http://www.dreyfus.org/tc.shtml.

Interested candidates should submit a complete packet of materials for internal review no later than 5 p.m. on Monday, September 18, 2006, via email, to graceb@jhu.edu. This ensures that the internal selection can be completed in a timely fashion and the final proposal be submitted to the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation by the Thursday, November 9, 2006 deadline.

If you have any questions, please contact Grace Bigelow (410/516-5256 or graceb@jhu.edu) or visit the University Research Projects Administration website: http://jhuresearch.jhu.edu/funding.htm#jhu-coordinated.

American Federation for Aging Research Invites Grant Applications

Deadline: December 15, 2006

The major goal of the American Federation for Aging Research ( http://www.afar.org ) Research Grants program is to assist in the development of the careers of junior investigators committed to pursuing careers in the field of aging research.

AFAR provides up to $60,000 for a one- to two-year award to junior faculty (M.D.s and Ph.D.s) to do research that will serve as the basis for longer term research efforts. A typical successful applicant will be serving in his or her first or second year of a junior faculty appointment.

AFAR funds research projects concerned with understanding the basic mechanisms of aging. Projects investigating age-related diseases are also supported, especially if approached from the point of view of how basic aging processes may lead to these outcomes. Projects concerning mechanisms underlying common geriatric functional disorders are also encouraged, as long as these include connections to fundamental problems in the biology of aging. Projects that deal strictly with clinical problems such as the diagnosis and treatment of disease, health outcomes, or the social context of aging are not eligible. All candidates must submit applications endorsed by their institution. Complete application procedures are available at the AFAR Web site: http://fconline.foundationcenter.org/pnd/10004013/afar
