National Science Foundation - Instrumentation for Materials Research - Major Instrumentation Projects (IMR-MRI) (RESPONSE NEEDED BY Tuesday, September 13, 2005)

The National Science Foundation invites applications in response to the Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) Instrument Development and Acquisition Solicitation; NSF 05-513, which states:

This program in the Division of Materials Research provides support for the design and construction of major instruments costing more than $2 million at major US facilities. The program also supports the development of detailed conceptual and engineering design for new tools for materials preparation or characterization at major national facilities. Such instruments may include, for example, neutron beam lines, synchrotron beam lines, and high field magnets, as well as development of detectors and preparation environments necessary to support materials research.

The program supports two types of awards: Conceptual and Engineering Design (CED) awards and Construction (CNST) awards. A CED award will enable the proposer to do the necessary engineering design of the instrument. A CNST proposal may only be submitted after a satisfactory engineering design of the instrument has been completed and has been approved by both the facility at which the instrument will be situated and by NSF. The program does not provide operating funds for projects it supports through this solicitation.

Full programs guidelines can be obtained on the NSF website at: http://www.nsf.gov/
pubs/ 2005/ nsf05513/nsf05513.htm

Proposals must be received by NSF (via FastLane) no later than 5 p.m. on Thursday, October 17, 2005. Because there are explicit restrictions on the number of applications that can be accepted (one per institution), please notify Grace Bigelow at graceb@jhu.edu regarding your intention to submit an application no later than Tuesday, September 13, 2005, to determine if an internal review process is required. Please include a brief summary of your intended project that includes:

  1. The names of all investigators
  2. Type of award
  3. Purpose of project
  4. Anticipated impact of the research
  5. All costs associated with the proposed project

If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact Grace Bigelow at 410-516-5256 or graceb@jhu.edu.

Burroughs Wellcome Fund Award Program in Pathogenesis of Infectious Disease for 2006 (RESPONSE NEEDED BY September 23, 2005)

The goal of the Pathogenesis of Infectious Disease Program is to provide new opportunities for accomplished investigators still early in their careers to study pathogenesis, utilizing multidisciplinary approaches, with a focus on the intersection of human and pathogen biology. BWF is particularly interested in work focused on the host, as well as host-pathogen studies originating in viral, bacterial, fungal, or parasite systems. Studies in this area may have their root in the pathogen, but the focus of the work should be on the effects on the host at the cellular and/or systemic levels. Genetic, biochemical, and immunological approaches are all appropriate.

The awards program will provide $400,000 over a five year period and intended to give recipients the freedom and flexibility to pursue new avenues of inquiry and higher-risk research projects.

Eligible candidates must have an MD, DVM, or PHD degree, an established record of independent research, and must hold a tenure-track position as an assistant professor or equivalent.

Once again this year, Hopkins has been invited to submit two nominations (three, if one nominee holds a DVM) for this program. Therefore, an internal peer review to select our nominees will be managed through the Provost's Office.

Required materials for internal review:

  1. JHU Internal Submission Cover Sheet (see attached)
  2. Research plan (5-7 pages, not including figures and references)
  3. Budget (one page)
  4. Curriculum Vitae (2-4 pages)
  5. A letter of recommendation from the candidate's department head
  6. A list of up to 3 reprints (with electronic links when possible)

Full program information can be obtained on the Burroughs Wellcome Fund Program website located at: http://www.bwfund.org/programs/infectious_disease/pathogenesis_
background.html

Interested candidates should submit a complete packet of materials for internal review no later than 5 p.m. on Friday, September 23, 2005, via email, to graceb@jhu.edu. This ensures that the internal selection can be completed in a timely fashion and the final proposal can be submitted to the Burroughs Wellcome Fund by the Tuesday, November 1, 2005 deadline.

If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Bigelow (graceb@jhu.edu or 410-516-5256) or visit the University Research Projects Administration website: http://jhuresearch.jhu.edu/funding.htm#jhu-coordinated
