FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES- Back

W.W. Smith Charitable Trust - Heart Research Grants for 2006 (RESPONSE NEEDED BY August 10, 2005)

The W. W. Smith Charitable Trust awards grants for basic medical research for young investigators with appointments in universities, hospitals and research centers located in the Delaware Valley. Although there are no specific funding parameters identified by the Smith Foundation, proposals usually contain requests of approximately $100k each year for a period of three years.

Once again this year, Hopkins has been invited to submit one nomination for the Heart Research Grant Program. Therefore, an internal peer review to select our nominee will be managed through the Provost's Office.

Required materials for internal review:

  1. JHU Internal Submission Cover Sheet
  2. Research plan (4-5 pages, not including figures and references)
  3. Budget (one page)
  4. Curriculum Vitae (2-4 pages, listing all funding sources)
  5. A letter of recommendation from the candidate's department head
  6. A list of up to 4 reprints (with electronic links when possible)

Additional program information can be obtained on the W.W. Smith Charitable Trust website located at: http://www.wwsmithcharitabletrust.org/.

Interested candidates should submit a complete packet of materials for internal review no later than 5 p.m. on Wednesday, August 10, 2005, via email, to graceb@jhu.edu. This ensures that the internal selection can be completed in a timely fashion and the final nomination can be submitted to the W.W. Smith Charitable Trust by the September 15, 2005 deadline. If you have any questions, please contact Grace Bigelow (410-516-5256; graceb@jhu.edu).

Robert Wood Johnson Health & Society Scholars Program (Deadline: October 15, 2005)

The Robert Wood Johnson Health & Society Scholars Program is designed to build the nation's capacity for research, leadership, and action to address the broad range of factors that affect health. This special program is intended to produce leaders who will change the questions asked, the methods employed to analyze problems, and the range of solutions offered to reduce population health disparities and improve the health of all Americans. It will enable up to 18 outstanding individuals who have completed their doctoral training to engage in an intensive 2-year program at one of six nationally prominent universities, beginning in the fall semester of 2006. Scholars will receive an annual stipend of $77,000 in year one and $80,000 in year two.

To be eligible, scholars must:

  1. have completed doctoral training by the time of entry into the program (August 2006) in one of a variety of disciplines, ranging from the behavioral and social sciences to the biological and natural sciences and health professions;
  2. have significant research experience;
  3. clearly connect their research interests to substantive population health concerns; and
  4. be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

Individuals must apply online through the program's Web site. Complete program information and application procedures are available at: http://www.healthandsociety
scholars.org/

Although internal review of applications by the Provost's Office is not required for this program, applications should still be submitted as proposals for funding through the applicant's divisional research administration office before formal application is made to the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Note the application deadline is October 15, 2005. A copy of the finalized application should be sent to the Office of Research Projects Administration via email at graceb@jhu.edu. If you have any questions, please contact Grace Bigelow (410-516-5256, graceb@jhu.edu). Thank you for your attention to this matter.
