FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES- Back

Human Immunology Award Program Invites Applications From Postdoctoral Researchers

Established jointly by the Irvington Institute for Immunological Research (http://www.
irvingtoninstitute.org/
) and the Dana Foundation (http://www.dana.org/ ), the Human Immunology Award is a postdoctoral program for investigators pursuing research in human immunology.

Eligible applicants must be postdoctoral fellows (Junior/Senior), M.D.s, and/or M.D./Ph.Ds pursuing research in human immunology with an emphasis on diabetes, HIV/AIDS, cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and other diseases of the immune system; a direct disease perspective; and, preferably, material from or analyses directly on patients.

The stipend is $45,000 per year, for a maximum of three years, to the designated laboratory's institution in support of the fellow's training.

The application deadline is July 12, 2005. Note that an internal review of applications by the Provost's Office is not required for this program. Applications should first be submitted as proposals for funding through the applicant's divisional research administration office before formal application to the Irvington Institute for Immunological Research. A copy of the finalized application should be sent to the Office Of Research Projects Administration via email at graceb@jhu.edu. For more details on this program, check the RFP at: http://www.irvingtoninstitute.org/fellowships.html

If you have any questions, please contact Grace Bigelow at 410-516-5256 or via email (graceb@jhu.edu).

Burroughs Wellcome Clinical Scientist Awards in Translational Research

The Burroughs Wellcome Fund will allow the SOM to nominate up to FOUR (4) candidates for their Clinical Scientist Awards in Translational Research. Therefore, an internal selection process is necessary. Please note the July 13th internal deadline below.

The purpose of this research program is to develop and increase the productivity of an established physician-scientist who will strengthen translational research. Of particular interest are investigators who will bring novel ideas and new approaches to translational research and who are mentoring the next generation of physician-scientists. For the purposes of this award, translational research includes studies which involve mechanisms of disease, clinical diagnosis, and disease management.

Candidates must have an MD or MD-PhD degree and hold a primary or secondary appointment in a clinical department, be at the late assistant professor or associate professor level, and demonstrate an established, independent research career.

Burroughs Wellcome anticipates making up to seven awards, each of which will provide $750,000 over a period of five years ($150,000 per year). Additional details are posted at http://www.bwfund.org/programs/translational/clinical_scientists_main.html

Nominations should be sent directly to Amanda Gibson Heir (agibson8@jhmi.edu) and must include a brief letter of support from the Department Director, a copy of the nominee's biosketch, and a one-page abstract of the nominee's translational research program by Wednesday, July 13th. Each department Director may nominate two candidates. Internal selection will be completed quickly so that the selected candidates have ample time to prepare their applications for the external September 1st deadline.
