Research Registrations and Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) Review

Investigators are reminded that NIH regulations and Johns Hopkins policies require IBC review of projects that involve the use of Recombinant DNA in research laboratories or clinical studies. Further information may be found at the Johns Hopkins Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) website: www.hopkinsibc.org

Guidance on the registration requirements for research involving Infectious Agents, Pathogens, and/or Biological Toxins is also provided.


Select Agent Regulations

The DHHS and USDA Select Agent Final Rules were published March 18, 2005 and went into effect April 18, 2005. Investigators are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the Johns Hopkins Select Agent Policy available at the following website: http://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/hse/Policies/HSE_Policies/indiv_sections/hse505.pdf


Laboratory Gloves Outside the Lab

Latex, Nitrile, or any other gloves worn for protection in a laboratory should not be worn in non-laboratory or public areas including exterior hallways, offices, elevators, etc. There is no need for gloves if your research materials are properly packaged for safe transport from one location to another.
