Safety of Gene Transfer Studies

As you may be aware, there was a serious adverse event in an X-SCID gene transfer study.

The NIH Recombinant DNA Advisory Committee (RAC) will ensure a more in-depth public discussion of the adverse event and its implications for retroviral gene transfer trials and facilitate the development of scientific and policy recommendations to ensure the safety of patients enrolled in gene transfer studies. The NIH will be organizing a safety symposium on retroviral-mediated gene transfer as part of the March 5-7, 2003 RAC meeting. This meeting will be open to the public. Broad participation is encouraged. More information is available at: www4.od.nih.gov/oba/RAC/ meeting.html
