ANIMAL RESEARCH - Back

James Owiny To Leave Hopkins

James Owiny, our Training and Compliance Administrator has accepted a position as University Veterinarian at Colorado State University inFt. Collins. His last day at JHU will be July 5th.

James first was at Hopkins in the early '90's as a veterinary fellow in the Comparative Medicine residency program and returned in his present capacity in the summer of 2000. He has been a critically important player in University efforts to revamp IACUC function and improve our animal care and use program overall in the past few years. I am particularly proud of the teaching efforts James has spearheaded or partnered in, from the IACUC seminar series, to the rodent surgery and handling workshops, to the web-based course in Humane Science.

Despite his rather formidable title and the need sometimes to be firm about meeting regulatory requirements, many of us have come to know how truly kind, supportive, and helpful a person James is to all who have come to him for advice or counsel, or out of frustration at the seemingly ever-changing requirements. I have found him a wonderful colleague with whom to partner in our work, and all of us in the IACUC office will miss him.

Please join me in wishing him and his family well in their new life in the Rockies.

Sincerely,

Nancy A. Ator, Ph.D.
Chair, JHU IACUC

NIH has released a video "Training in Basic Biomethodology for Laboratory Mice". To obtain a free copy send an email to rodent-cd@mail.nih.gov.

Protocol Management

We are performing final validations of eSirius, the online protocol management system. A group of twenty Principal Investigators will participate in live demonstrations of the system over the next few weeks. If you have any questions about eSirius please send an email to acuc@jhmi.edu.

We are reminding investigators that use of animals for training must be described in detail in their animal use protocols or related amendments including source of the animals. Individuals wishing to use animals from the euthanasia rack for terminal procedures must state so in their protocol or amendments.

All individuals working with animals must be familiar with the procedures described in the protocol. Only individuals listed on an approved animal use protocol can work on a protocol or obtain access to the central animal facilities operated by Research Animal Resources. To add an individual to a protocol download and complete the personnel amendment form located at http://www.jhu.edu/animalcare/forms1.html Submit completed forms to the Animal Care and Use Committee office in Reed Hall B122.

New cage cards for identifying animals that have been exposed to potentially hazardous materials are now available from Research Animal Resources staff in the animal facilities.

Please share this information with members of your laboratory.
