Euthanasia for Rodents and Small Mammals

Carbon dioxide is a common method of euthanasia for rodents and small mammals. Compressed carbon dioxide gas in cylinders is the only recommended source of carbon dioxide for euthanasia. Euthanasia chambers should not be pre-charged with carbon dioxide before putting the animals in. Upon completion of the procedure death must be confirmed by an appropriate method. Particular attention should be paid to neonatal animals, as they are resistant to carbon dioxide's effects and may require alternate methods of euthanasia. For details please refer to the animal care and use committee guidance on this subject at: http://www.jhu.edu/animalcare/committee_
euthanasia.html

The NIH Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW) has issued additional guidance on this subject as well, see: http://grants1.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-02-062.html
