Frequently Asked Questions - Dental Care

Johns Hopkins Community Physicians is offering dental discounts along with your US Family Health Plan medical benefits. These discounted dental benefits are being provided through United Concordia Companies, Inc. and its DENTAL VALUE NETWORK (DVN).

Q: What is Dental Value Network (DVN)?
A: DVN is a discounted fee-for-service network.

Q: Do members have to site select?
A: No, site selection is not necessary, they can go to any dental office on the directory whenever they want.

Q: Can they be seen at more than one office?
A: Yes, members may receive benefits from any participating DVN provider.

Q: Do members need a referral to see a specialist?
A: No, members can go directly to participating specialists.

Q: Can a member go to a non-participating dentist?
A: Yes, members can go out-of-network, but they will pay the dentist’s usual charges, which is higher than if they see a DVN provider.

Q: Are the fees different for general dentists and specialists?
A: Yes, for some specialty procedures, the member will pay more to see a specialist.

Q: What do the two columns on the Schedule of Charges represent?
A: The two columns represent what amount is to be paid if the member sees a general dentist (GEN) or if the member sees a specialist (SPEC).

Q: What if a procedure is not listed on the Schedule of Charges?
A: This means that the procedure is not covered and the patient is responsible for the dentist’s usual charges.

Q: Can the dentist charge more than the Schedule of Charges (i.e. “balance-bill”)?
A: No, the dentist has contractually accepted the Schedule of Charges as his/her payment in full.

Q: Are there any deductibles/maximums/monthly premiums?
A: No.

Q: Is the DVN network national?
A: No, the DVN network is primarily in MD, DC & Northern Virginia.

Q: What happens if a member resides in Florida for a portion of the year and needs dental care?
A: The member would pay the dentist’s usual charges, because he/she would be going out-of-network.

Q: Will there be membership cards?
A: No, the US Family Health Plan members would use their Plan ID cards.

Q: How is eligibility determined?
A: Members will identify themselves as US Family Health Plan members and show their Plan card to the dental office.

Q: If a dentist is not listed on the directory, can a member still see him?
A: Not according to the DVN Schedule of Charges. The member will have to pay the dentist’s usual charges.

Q: How does Coordination of Benefits work?
A: Coordination of Benefits does not apply to DVN. Another dental insurance would be primary.

Q: Are there any Exclusions & Limitations?
A: No.
