Patients who come to Johns Hopkins gain access to the vast resources of one of the world’s premier medical institutions. Whatever conditions face our patients, whatever challenges may arise during the transplantation process, the full resources of Johns Hopkins are available to them.
Our approach to liver transplant care seeks to allow patients to have the fullest, most enriching lives possible. We treat each patient, whether a liver recipient or a possible donor, as an individual.

Our physicians are committed to providing total care for our patients at every stage of their transplant journey. Our team’s specialty areas include:
The surgical director of the liver transplant team, Dr. Warren Maley is an expert in traditional and split-liver transplantation. When Dr. Maley took on the leadership of the program in 2005, he encouraged the team to explore new avenues to improve patient care while maintaining high safety standards. The team's success in this area can been seen in our increased transplant volumes and patient survival statistics since he took on leadership in 2005.
The adult liver program is equally enhanced by the medical direction of hepatologist, Dr. Paul Thuluvath. Over the past thirteen years, his research has centered around the optimal selection of patients for liver transplantation. This expertise translates directly to the team's ability to provide excellent patient care to individuals with end-stage liver disease.
Johns Hopkins' excellence in nursing has always been of immeasurable importance to our liver transplant patients. The two lead nurse practitioners in the program bring in-depth experience in hepatology and in-patient liver transplant care. Today, the nursing team shares forty years of experience in liver transplantation.
