Patient and Family Support
All patients waiting for organ transplant receive extensive support to educate and prepare them for organ transplantation. Patients and families will be invited to participate in a day-long Family Orientation, a springtime Patient Conference and our evening education seminars. We also have a unique patient mentoring program. The more opportunities patients take to learn about transplantation and ask questions of their medical team, the more patients and their families will know how to improve their transplant journey.
Learn more about CTC events:
The Family Orientation
After being approved for transplantation, patients and their families are invited to attend a full-day Family Orientation at Hopkins. During this day, transplant surgeons, nephrologists, transplant coordinators, and social workers will discuss various aspects of transplantation with patients and their families and answer questions. A Johns Hopkins Transplant Financial Coordinator, specialized in transplantation insurance, will also discuss insurance coverage for transplant care and medications. Speak with your transplant coordinator for more information.
The Annual Transplant Patient Conference
Every spring, the Comprehensive Transplant Center offers a conference for pre- and post-transplant patients, families and caregivers. 8:00 am - 3:30 pm, Saturday in May or June at a venue in Maryland. Registration required.
Evening Education & Support:
Multi-organ Educational Support Groups
Opportunities to meet other transplant patients and hear their stories are offered every month. These sessions offer excellent opportunities to have many of your questions answered. Experts in various fields are also frequently invited to speak on topics such as: coping with stress, living donation, medications, and nutrition. Link to the CTC's calendar for date and time.
Mentoring Program
We offer a unique peer-to-peer mentoring program for patients listed for transplant at Johns Hopkins. Hopkins staff can match transplant candidates, caregivers and donors with someone who has already experienced transplantation.

The Annual Holiday Party
During this festive time of year our CTC hosts a very special party. You and your family are invited to celebrate the gift of life with Hopkins' transplant team and to see friends in an informal evening of merriment. A fat man in a red suit always joins the fun by bringing presents for the little ones. RSVP required. Link to the CTC's calendar for date and time.
