Kathy Siciliano, a heart transplant patient who played golf in the 2000 Transplant Olympic Games in Orlando, was responsible for encouraging Steve to sign up. “It’s an unbelievable experience,” says Steve. “It’s a sea of transplant families and proves that you can live a normal, productive life after transplantation.” There are competitions in track and field, pole vault, swimming, table tennis, bowling, golf, and softball throw.
Sixteen Team Maryland athletes competed in 2000 against thousands of the best transplant recipient athletes from across the country at the U.S. Transplant Games and brought home a total of 12 medals. The games took place recently at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla.The U.S. Transplant Games are sponsored by the National Kidney Foundation and Novartis.
“The games truly are a celebration of life,” said Barbara Mixter, lung recipient and gold and silver medal winner in bowling. “I went from being so sick to finding myself in the company of thousands of others who have all been given a second chance at life.”

2004 U.S. Transplant Games & Team Maryland
Team Maryland is a group of Maryland transplant recipients (solid organ transplants) who will participate in Olympic-style athletic events at the 2004 U.S. Transplant Games. The games will be July 27-August 1, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The team is looking to recruit new members.
