Annual Conference Will Educate and Inspire More Than 300 Patients and Caregivers

Hopkins will offer its Eighth Annual Transplant Conference at the Timonium Holiday Inn on Saturday, May 13, 2006. This free conference will offer information for individuals at all stages of the transplant process.

The conference is designed to bring 350 pre- and post-transplant individuals together with their medical teams to learn about the latest issues in transplantation as well as review basic information for patients who are just beginning their transplant journey.

Interacting with over 350 patients from diverse backgrounds - particularly post-transplant patients - is an invaluable experience to transplant candidates who oftentimes feel they are isolated and confronting numerous, long-term medical challenges.

Patients and family members come away from the conference more knowledgeable about participating in their own care and inspired by their experiences interacting with patients and staff.

The CTC invites patients and healthcare providers from all over the United States to the annual, day-long transplant conference. Most of the conference goers are from Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C. Adult and pediatric transplant patients are invited, as well as their family members and caregivers.

Dr. Hamid Rabb

Pictured Left, Dr. Hamid Rabb, Medical Director of the Hopkins Kidney program, will be a speaker during the Annual Patient Conference on May 13th. Dr. Rabb will talk how to improve health by targeting cardiovascular risk factors (including hypertension). Dr. Rabb and his team recently developed a pre-transplant guideline on this topic. Among the issues he will discuss are cigarettes, diet, weight loss, exercise, diabetes control and more.

The highlight of the conference agenda for many patients are the sessions that are dedicated to their special programs: Liver Transplantation, Lung Transplantation, Heart Transplantation, Kidney/Pancreas Transplantation.

This conference offers a special presentation from Dr. Henry Lau of the Hopkins Pediatric Transplant Program. Also, the program offers a variety of sessions from Hopkins organ specialists, social workers, nurses and patients/caregivers, including: living donation, social and emotional issues, transplant medications, and more.
