Connections Fall 2005

New Staff Join the Transplant Team

Ashish S. Shah
Ashish S. Shah, M.D., Assistant Professor of Surgery, Heart and Lung Transplant Program

Dr. Shah joined the Comprehensive Transplant Center as a surgeon in the heart and lung transplant program in the summer of 2005. He brings extensive clinical experience to his role at Johns Hopkins. Dr. Shah conducted his training at Duke University and University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He is widely published and has given numerous presentations on his research in heart and lung transplantation. His clinical interests include cardiac surgery, lung transplantation, cardiac transplantation and mechanical circulatory support.

In June 2005, Ms. Doyle joined the CTC as a nurse practitioner. She previously worked as a nurse on Nelson7, a post-operative transplant floor for three years. She graduated with her MSN in the Adult Primary Care Nurse Practitioner program, at the Hopkins School of Nursing in May 2005. "I am fascinated by liver transplant surgery. I enjoy the evaluation process for liver transplant candidates as well as caring and educating the patients post- liver transplant surgery. Dr. Maley and the Liver Team are very compassionate about each of their roles with these patients, which is extremely admirable and creates an amazing and enjoyable work environment."

Kate Knott
Kate Knott, R.N., B.S.N., Kidney/Pancreas Transplant Coordinator

In June 2005, Ms. Knott joined the CTC as nurse coordinator in the transplant evaluation office. She has a Bachelors’ in Economics from Smith College. Prior to becoming a transplant coordinator, Ms. Knott was a nurse on the adolescent medical-surgical unit in the Children’s Center. In this role, she took care of a variety of transplant patients including kidney, lung and bone marrow transplant recipients.  "Why did I choose this career? I saw that the lives and bodies of kidney patients were affected in so many ways by their disease. It was so gratifying to see patients become healthy and leave dialysis after successful transplants... having the opportunity to help patients achieve a successful transplant is what brought me here."

Ms. Rettaliata joined the Comprehensive Transplant Center in the fall of 2005. She graduated from nursing school in 1990 and has, until taking this position, worked as an Operating Room (OR) Nurse. She held a position in the OR at University of Maryland, Shock Trauma, Montgomery General Hospital and St. Agnes Hospital.

Charnell Williams
Charnell Williams, R.N., B.S., Abdominal On-Call Transplant Coordinator

Ms. Williams joined the CTC in winter of 2005. For the last four years she was employed as a registered nurse in the Weinberg operating room (OR) at Johns Hopkins. In the OR, she had the opportunity to participate in kidney and liver transplants. When I was offered a position to help coordinate organ transplants, I thought it would be a great opportunity to participate in another aspect of the transplant process. What I like most about this position is being able to tell a patient that he or she will be receiving a transplant and hearing their joyful response.

In the summer of 2005, Ms. Marable joined the Comprehensive Transplant Center as a Patient Service Coordinator for the Kidney Transplant Follow-up office. She worked on The Johns Hopkins campus in various administrative offices before she joined the CTC. She worked in the Johns Hopkins Outpatient Center in the Department of Dermatology, the Division of Endocrinology, and at the Johns Hopkins White Marsh campus in the Wilmer Eye Institute. "I believe I was offered this position because I am a team player, I love talking to people, I also love to help people. I feel good going home knowing that I help someone get what they needed. It makes me feel better about coming to work everyday!"

Mrs. Peters joined the Comprehensive Transplant Center as the Lead Nurse Coordinator for the Kidney/Pancreas Transplant program. She brings extensive clinical and nurse management experience to Johns Hopkins, including: an MS in Nursing Administration and inpatient and outpatient director level clinical roles. She has experience as a procurement coordinator with the New England Organ Bank, and TRC, as well as OPO hospital development responsibilities. She is currently enrolled in a PhD program at George Mason University in Fairfax, VA with a focus on nursing administration and health policy. " In my past position, I found myself in a totally administrative position responsible for multiple departments, and missed the clinical contact and focus on patient care. I am excited about the opportunity to combine clinical practice with the leadership of such a strong nursing team in the core kidney office."

Mrs. Walker joined the CTC in July of 2005. She graduated from Dominican College School of Nursing. She has worked as an RN for the last 12 years in New Jersey and Maryland with the last 7 spent in gastroenterology. She has worked with a variety of patients and now looks forward to specializing in transplantation. "I am excited to join this top notch transplant team. Most of all I am thrilled to be working with the donors and supporting them in giving the ultimate gift of helping another patient improve their quality of life. They are true life heroes."
