Many patients at our East Baltimore campus will stay in our newest facilities, which represent a $1.1 billion investment in patient care. The Sheikh Zayed Tower and The Charlotte R. Bloomberg Children's Center bring an astonishing level of service and innovation to our East Baltimore medical campus.

Basic Facts

  • 560 private patient rooms (355 adult and 205 pediatric)
  • main entrance is larger than a football field
  • located on a 5-acre site
  • lower floors are nearly 3 acres each
  • buildings have 1,370 miles of copper wiring, enough to stretch from Baltimore to Miami
  • more than 4,700 people worked on construction

Construction Materials

  • 12,500 tons of structural steel
  • 44,500 cubic yards of new concrete
  • 3.5 million pounds of sheet metal ductwork for HVAC systems
  • more than 4,000 plumbing fixtures
  • 244,000 square feet of glass window walls and exterior windows, including 1,423 curtain wall panels weighing up to 1,800 pounds each

Sheikh Zayed Tower (adult care)

  • 355 private inpatient rooms
    • 224 acute care
    • 96 intensive care
    • 35 obstetric

Bloomberg Children's Center

  • 205 private inpatient rooms
    • 120 acute care
    • 45 neonatal intensive care (NICU)
    • 40 pediatric intensive care (PICU)
  • Level-1 pediatric trauma services
  • pediatric burn services
  • two-story indoor play area

Adult Emergency Department

  • 67 private exam rooms
  • 6 trauma care rooms equipped with the latest medical technology
  • expanded radiology suite featuring x-ray, CT, MRI and ultrasound
  • 17-bed acute care observation unit integrated into the department
  • "front door" location in the new hospital building
  • able to accommodate up to 75,000 visits a year

Pediatric Emergency Department

  • doubles the size of the previous facility
  • able to share trauma capacity with the adult emergency department
  • the only state-designated trauma center for children in Maryland
