Hidradenitis is a disease that involves chronic inflammation of the hair follicles, nearby sweat glands, and surrounding tissue.

Inflamed/Infected Hair Follicles and Sweat Glands: What You Need to Know

  • This chronic condition occurs when the hair follicles and nearby apocrine (sweat) glands in the groin, underarms, and buttocks and for some women, under their breasts, become infected and inflamed. Because of the way the condition spreads, inflammation and additional flare ups can be difficult to control.
  • While this condition can be painful and lead to social isolation and even depression, you should not be ashamed.  This is a medical condition. Our doctors work closely with patients to find appropriate treatments that will minimize their pain and improve quality of life.
  • Hidradenitis occurs in 2-3% of the population. Hidradenitis treatment includes a combination of medications, both topical and by mouth. In some cases, laser hair removal can be an effective treatment. However, there is no cure.

Why choose Johns Hopkins for treatment of inflamed/infected hair follicles and sweat glands?
