  JOIN US IN 2006!

5th International Workshop on the
Molecular Biology of Stress Responses

  Concepcion, Chile
March 21-26, 2006

Registration now open! Flag of Chile

On behalf of Cell Stress Society International, I invite you to participate in the Fifth International Workshop on the Molecular Biology of Stress Responses, to be held March 21-26, 2006 in Concepción, Chile.  I have the honor, along with Dr. Sandra Nicovani (University of Concepcion, Chile), Dr. Virginia L. Vega (Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD, USA), and Dr. Robert M. Tanguay (Universite Laval, Quebec, Canada), to head the organizing committee for this important workshop.

It is Cell Stress Society International’s aim to bring exciting research on heat shock protein biology to all corners of the world. Past workshops were extremely successful in establishing collaboration among laboratories of different countries. The 2004 meeting, held in the Chinese cities of Wuhan and Yichang, was attended by over 100 scientists from top universities and representing more than 10 nations.

We sincerely hope that you will join us at this exciting conference!

Best regards,

Antonio De Maio, Ph.D.

ABOUT CONCEPCION

Concepcion is located 550 km (342 miles) south of Chile's capital, Santiago, beside the Bio-Bio River. The city offers several historic attractions including the Plaza de Armas (Independence Square); the Mercado Municipal (Municipal Market); the Pinacoteca (Art Museum), which houses an extensive collection of works by Chilean painters; and Parque Ecuador (Equator Park), which includes a museum of the area's history. A nearby site of interest is Talcahuano, the leading port of the country and a great place for seafood. A day trip from Concepcion will bring you to the towns of Lota and Coronel, where you can visit El Chiflon del Diablo, an undersea coal mine. Outdoor activities such as mountain climbing, horseback riding, hiking, mountain biking, and bathing in las thermas (hot springs) can be enjoyed outside the city of Chillan, which is one hour from Concepcion and a popular place for souvenir shopping. Concepcion is also located one hour from the Itata Valley, where you can visit beautiful vineyards and taste various Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Chardonnay wines. March is early fall in Chile, so expect pleasant weather with blue skies and temperatures of 18-21°C (65-70°F). The site of our workshop, The University of Concepcion ("UdeC"), is the third largest university in Chile and located in the heart of the city.

UdeC Campanil Take a virtual tour of the UdeC campus! (NOTE: This feature is in Spanish. On the main screen, choose "Campus Concepcion" from the left-hand menu; a video/map will appear. To view a specific area of the campus, click the arrows on the video or the yellow circles on the map.)

PROGRAM

Overview

The workshop will open on Tuesday night (3/21) with a welcome reception. Scientific sessions by invited speakers and participants, including poster sessions, will run Wednesday (3/22) through Saturday (3/25). Tentative topics to be discussed include:  the structure and function of heat shock proteins; the regulation of heat shock expression; and the role of heat shock proteins in cancer, cardiovascular disease, immunity, pathogenesis, inflammation, and oxidative stress. The workshop will close Saturday night with a farewell party. For those participants who have little background knowledge of heat shock proteins, we will offer a pre-workshop tutorial session on Tuesday.
