Located in the Division of Pediatric Surgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Dr. De Maio and his staff are studying the molecular and genetic bases of the response to injury. Traumatic injury is a major cause of mortality and morbidity in the United States, particularly among children. Dr. De Maio's laboratory has found that the response to injury is modulated by several confounding factors including genetic background, sex, age, diet, and environment. In addition, Dr. De Maio's laboratory is studying the role of heat shock proteins in the response to stress.
The De Maio Laboratory is actively engaged in the training of basic scientists, future academic pediatric surgeons, and students at the undergraduate, graduate, and medical school levels. For more information on their research, please click here.
Dr. De Maio is Associate Professor and Research Director for the Division of Pediatric Surgery. He also holds a secondary appointment as Associate Professor of Physiology. A graduate of the Central University of Venezuela in Caracas, Dr. De Maio received his Ph.D. from the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel. He is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Society for Cell Biology, Cell Stress Society International, International Endotoxin Society, Panamerican Trauma Society, Shock Society, Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science, and Society of Critical Care Medicine. At Hopkins, he serves on the policy committee for the Graduate Program in Cellular and Molecular Medicine and acts as coordinator for first-year student rotations. Dr. De Maio also leads the Committee for the Recruitment of Unrepresented Minorities to Graduate Programs and the Post-baccalaureate Research Education Program (PREP).
