Steven D. Leach, M.D.

Steven D. Leach is the Paul K. Neumann Professor in Pancreatic Cancer, and Professor of Surgery, Oncology and Cell Biology.  He is also Vice Chair for Academic Affairs in the Department of Surgery, and a member of the McKusick-Nathans Institute of Genetic Medicine.  Dr. Leach graduated from Princeton University in 1982 and received his MD degree from Emory University in 1986. He completed his residency in General Surgery and a two-year research fellowship in pancreatic cell biology at Yale University. This was followed by a Surgical Oncology Fellowship at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. Dr. Leach joined the Vanderbilt University faculty as an Assistant Professor of Surgery in 1995, and became an Associate Professor of Surgery and Cell Biology in 1999. He was recruited to join the faculty at Johns Hopkins in July, 2000 as the first Paul K. Neumann Professor.

Research Interests: 

Dr. Leach directs an NIH-funded research program focused on the regulation of epithelial differentiation in embryonic, adult and neoplastic pancreas, using both mouse and zebrafish model systems.  He is also PI on a large NIH P01 grant focused on functional annotation of the pancreatic cancer genome, and directs an NIH T32 training program in Gastrointestinal Research.

Clinical Interests:

Dr. Leach's clinical practice is focused on surgical management of inguinal hernias.

Credentials:

Dr. Leach is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and?certified by the American Board of Surgery.
