J. Timothy Sherwood, M.D.
- Assistant Professor of Thoracic Surgery
- Head, Esophageal Surgery Program
J. Timothy Sherwood, MD is Assistant Professor of Thoracic Surgery at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and an attending surgeon at both The Johns Hopkins Hospital and The Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. Dr. Sherwood graduated with distinction from Cornell University with a B.S. in Biochemistry, and received his M.D. degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo where he was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. He performed residency training in internal medicine on the Osler Medical Service at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, and completed his general surgery training at Case Western Reserve University Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. While there he did extensive research in cardiopulmonary physiology as a fellow of the American Heart Association. He then completed a three year fellowship in thoracic surgery and lung transplantation at The University of Colorado Hospital and The National Jewish Medical Center for Respiratory Diseases in Denver.
While at the University of Colorado Hospital, Dr. Sherwood did extensive training in esophageal, lung, and airway surgery. He has advanced training in minimally invasive lung resection (VATS lobectomy) and lung cancer surgery, and also extensive experience performing very complex lung resections for patients with infectious lung disease such as mycobacterial diseases. His training in surgery for mycobacterial disease was under the guidance of the world renowned surgeon Dr.Marvin Pomerantz. He has expertise in the areas of surgery for emphysema, including lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS) and lung transplantation.
As the head of the esophageal surgery program at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Dr. Sherwood performs surgery on all types of benign and malignant esophageal diseases. He is facile in laparoscopic minimally invasive techniques as well as open surgical techniques. He performs minimally invasive/ laparoscopic surgery for gastroesophageal reflux (GERD), achalasia, paraesophageal and hiatal hernia. He also has a special interest in reoperative surgery for failed reflux operations. Dr Sherwood performs a large volume of esophageal resections for esophageal cancer, performing both transhiatal as well as Ivor Lewis techniques.
Dr Sherwood also leads the airway surgery program at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, and performs the majority of airway resections and endobronchial therapy here, including stent therapy for airway obstruction or tracheobronchial malacia.
