Dr. Malas joined the surgical faculty of the Johns Hopkins Hospital and Bayview Medical Center in 2005.  He received his General Surgery Training at the University of Southern California. He completed his Vascular and Endovascular Surgery Fellowship in the Division of Vascular & Endovascular Surgery at the Montefiore Medical Center, Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. The first Endovascular repair of a rupture aneurysm and the first carotid stenting under cerebral protection were done at that Institution.

  • Device development and complications prevention
  • Molecular biology of intimal hyperplesia and cryopreserved veins grafts
  • Drug-eluting stents to treat lower extremity arterial stenosis

Clinical Interests:

  • Cerebral Vascular Disease: stroke prevention, carotid endarterectomy with
        evoked potential neuromonitoring, carotid angioplasty/stenting under
        cerebral protection
  • Aortic Aneurysm Disease: open and endovascular repair of abdominal 
        aortic aneurysm (EVAR), open and endovascular repair of thoracic aortic 
        aneurysm (TEVAR), endovascular repair of aortic dissection
  • Perpheral Arterial Disease: medical management, minimally-invasive 
        angioplasty/stenting, limb salvage revascularization with bypass surgery,
        subclavian steal syndrome (subclavian stenosis) minimally-invasive repair,
        venous insufficiency, stasis and ulceration, minimally-invasive radiofrequency 
        ablation

Dr. Malas’ main clinical and research interests include minimally invasive endovascular repair of abdominal, thoracic and peripheral aneurysms, aortic dissection, angioplasty and stenting of: 1. the carotid artery with cerebral protection to prevent stroke; 2. the renal artery with filter protection to prevent renal failure and treat intractable hypertension; 3. the subclavian artery to treat steal syndrome; 4. the lower extremity arteries for limb salvage and to treat intermittent claudication. This is in addition to the traditional open vascular repair of aneurysms, lower extremities bypass, and carotid endarterectomy. Dr. Malas provides comprehensive assessment of venous disease, including varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency. When indicated, Dr. Malas offers the latest minimally invasive methods of treating these conditions with laser and radiofrequency ablation of veins.
