ELECTIVE OPPORTUNITIES
General Surgery and Surgical Specialties. Elective courses must be approved by the preceptor and the student's faculty advisor; any member of the department may act as preceptor.
A subinternship in surgery is designed to give the advanced student supervised participation in clinical care of patients. This elective must be applied for at least two months before the starting date to insure appropriate credentialing by the Department of Surgery and the hospital.
An advanced clerkship is designed to expose the student to patients with surgical problems. The student is given very limited clinical responsibilities and is not involved in any direct patient care. Approval of the curriculum consultant for surgery is needed to qualify for this elective.
Electives are available in GI, Trauma, Surgical Oncology, Thoracic and Vascular surgeries.

Sub-internship
Dr. Freischlag and staff. The students will be given more clinical responsibilities and will participate in the management and care Of surgical patents. The activities of the student will be supervised by the attending and house staff. This course is designed to provide extensive, in-depth experience in the management of the surgical patent. The student will be an integral part of the surgical team and will be assigned specific patients. Registration must be 8 weeks before this elective since credentialing is required by the Medical Board.
Internship In Surgery
Dr. Freischlag and staff. Oualified students wishing to take an accelerated program may apply for surgical internship during their Fourth Year. Twelve months, with rotations including general surgery, emergency surgery, selected surgical specialties. By arrangement with Dr. Freischlag. Approval of Committee on Student Promotion-Fourth Year is required
