Biography

A native of Baltimore, Dr. Shermak graduated Phi Beta Kappa and magna cum laude from Franklin and Marshall College. She earned her medical degree from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, and was the first to finish a combined residency program in general and plastic surgery at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. She is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Board Certified in Plastic Surgery and an active member in the American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS) and the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). After completing her plastic surgery training, Dr. Shermak went on to further specialized training in aesthetic, breast, and body contouring surgery under the direction of Dr. G. Patrick Maxwell in Nashville. There she learned the latest techniques in body contouring surgery, including liposuction and body lifts, and facial rejuvenation surgery, including laser resurfacing, facial peels, endoscopic surgery, and facelifts. Dr. Shermak has become nationally known for her work with body lifting procedures and work with massive weight loss patients. She has authored many publications in the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery. Her research has focused on the basic science of soft tissue and bone healing, tissue engineering, and the biology of fat; and clinically on breast surgery and body contouring surgery. She is a member of the Plastic Surgery Research Council. Dr. Shermak is an Assistant Professor in Plastic Surgery at The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and the Chief of the Division of Plastic Surgery at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.
