About Us

Surgeon-in-Chief Cameron Andrew

The Johns Hopkins Department of Surgery is built on the strong foundation laid by William Stewart Halsted. Halsted is considered by many as our country’s most influential surgeon, introducing the era of modern surgery as well as the concept of the clinician-scientist. The department’s leaders who followed Halsted — Lewis, Blalock, Zuidema, Cameron, Freischlag and Higgins and the physicians, nurses and staff members who worked with them have expanded on this legacy in every surgical field including breast, cardiac, colorectal, endocrine, gastrointestinal, hepato-pancreato-biliary, minimally invasive, pediatric, thoracic, transplant, trauma and vascular.

Today, we are proud to be considered among the best in the nation, due to our commitment to providing excellent patient care in a safe and supportive environment, our strong reputation for teaching medical students and training surgical residents, and our well-funded research program that fosters innovation and creativity.

Our shared future is upholding the great tradition of clinical care, teaching and research that has been our department’s constant. It is also pushing forward, helping to define where the field of surgery will be in 10 and 20 years, and beyond.

Sincerely,
Andrew Cameron, M.D., Ph.D.
Director, Department of Surgery
