Martha Zeiger received her undergraduate degree from Brown University and her medical degree from The University of Vermont College of Medicine. After serving in the United States Navy as a General Medical Officer in Hawaii she completed her General Surgical residency at Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine. Thereafter she worked as a Commander and Attending Surgeon at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. Dr. Zeiger then completed a fellowship in Surgical Oncology, focusing on Endocrine Surgery under the auspices of Drs. Steven Rosenberg and Jeffrey Norton at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in Bethesda, Maryland.

After fellowship training she began her career in 1993 as an attending surgeon at The Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions where she has built a very busy endocrine surgery practice, established an endocrine surgery fellowship program, and directed an NIH funded molecular biology lab for the past 15 years.  Her research projects include researching molecular markers associated with thyroid cancer in order to improve the current treatment of patients with suspicious thyroid nodules as well as the examination of several clinical aspects of hyperparathyroidism.  Currently, she is Chief of the Endocrine Surgery Section and Co-director of Research in the Department of Surgery.  Dr. Zeiger has also held several leadership positions in national medical societies, including Vice President of the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons (AAES), as Research, Publication and Membership Committee Member and Chair for AAES and the American Thyroid Association.  She currently serves as the AAES liaison to The American Association of Clinical Endocrinology.  She has also been instrumental in writing several clinical guidelines papers for endocrine surgical diseases. Furthermore, she currently directs an endocrine surgery fellowship at the Johns Hopkins Hospital.
