Diabetes Care Outside of the Hospital
Diabetes is a condition in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin, leading to high levels of sugar in the blood. If untreated, diabetes can cause major health problems including heart and kidney disease, blindness and nerve damage.
Treatment of diabetes involves a combination of medical treatment and lifestyle change to lower blood glucose levels in order to treat both immediate symptoms and underlying causes of diabetes whenever possible. Treatment does not stop after discharge from Suburban Hospital. A number of multidisciplinary services will be needed to help you live with diabetes.
- Endocrinologists, who are doctors specializing in hormonal conditions, generally serve as the main care provider who oversees testing and medication.
- Dietitians work with patients to control the effects of diabetes through diet and to promote weight loss in patients whose diabetes is a result of lifestyle factors
- Weight loss surgery is an option for people whose diabetes is a result of obesity. We refer patients to the bariatric surgery program at our nearby sister institution, Sibley Memorial Hospital, for consultation. See more about the program at sibleyweightloss.com.
