(Bethesda, MD, February 3, 2011) - Suburban Hospital welcomes Dr. Michael E. Zenilman as the new Vice Chair and Regional Director of Surgery for Johns Hopkins Medicine. In this newly created position, Dr. Zenilman will oversee surgery services delivered at Johns Hopkins Medicine’s community hospitals—Howard County General Hospital, Sibley Memorial Hospital, Suburban Hospital—and their ambulatory locations.
A gastrointestinal surgeon and specialist in geriatric surgery, Dr. Zenilman will establish a clinical practice out of Suburban Hospital. He will work closely with our medical staff leadership including Dr. Srinivas Sastry, Chair of the Department of Surgery, to identify and manage safety, quality and service excellence standards in surgical care delivered at the hospital and the Suburban Outpatient Surgery Center to align them with JHM best practices.
Among other responsibilities in this newly established role, Dr. Zenilman will participate in our efforts to recruit and retain new physicians and staff to support our clinical goals. He will work to enhance educational programs at Suburban Hospital and for the community-based surgeons in the National Capital Region.
Finally, Dr. Zenilman will be exploring ways to further expand and enhance our research programs, including developing new relationships with the NIH.
Dr. Zenilman joins us from SUNY Downstate Medical Center, where he most recently served as Chairman of the Department of General Surgery. He has had a long and distinguished career as a clinician, teacher, researcher, and is the author of medical textbooks and hundreds of peer-reviewed articles. He has also received numerous awards for his scholarly work, teaching, leadership, and research.
