About Us

The Johns Hopkins Center for Substance Abuse Treatment and Research is a multidisciplinary center designed to integrate and coordinate Hopkins substance abuse services, improve the patient’s experience and treatment, track patient outcomes, and strengthen teaching and research in addictions. A unique organizational structure has been created to bring together the various clinical entities that focus on addictions throughout the institution.

Background

For over three decades Johns Hopkins has been delivering treatment services to patients with substance use disorders in the local community with programs operated on both campuses of the Johns Hopkins Hospital (East Baltimore and Bayview). This experience has contributed substantially to our understanding of the nature of these disorders and the optimal approaches to treating persons who suffer from these conditions. Our addiction research has influenced the practice of medicine worldwide and our training, especially in addiction research, has produced many of the leaders in the field. In 2009 the Johns Hopkins Center for Substance Abuse Treatment and Research was created to more effectively organize existing services, support research, and improve training – while planning for changes in the field of addictions.

Goals

  • to provide comprehensive, integrated treatment across a coordinated continuum of care
  • to employ evidence-based models of care through comprehensive disease management systems
  • to establish Hopkins as the recognized center of choice to provide expert consultation and care for substance abuse patients
  • to strengthen research in basic and clinical aspects of substance abuse
  • provide the finest post-graduate training in substance abuse
