Summer Research Experience for Medical Students
New This Year!!! This year there is a new summer research experience for Johns Hopkins medical students who are interested in clinical research. This is made possible through a new NIH Roadmap funded Pre-doctoral Clinical Research Training Grant. Clinical research includes research with human subjects:
- Patient-oriented research;
- Clinical epidemiology and behavioral studies; and
- Outcomes research and health services research.
Students who are accepted into this program will have the opportunity to participate in several activities over 8 weeks including:
- “Hands on” conduct of a research project such as a literature review, data collection from research subjects, or data analysis under the supervision of a mentor;
- Research team meetings with the mentor, other investigators, and clinical research staff;
- Structured readings and/or web-based modules about key topics in the area of clinical research (e.g., conducting human subjects research, choosing a research question, developing a protocol, conduct of the study, analyzing results, drawing and reporting conclusions);
- Weekly career development seminars (e.g. research careers in academia, government or industry; selecting a mentor; financial obligations, balancing career and family); and
- A write up of the experience.
The program includes a stipend for the student and for the mentor.
