The Healthy Lifestyles (HL) program is one of many “arms” that comprise Bienestar Baltimore, a student-run tri-school organization dedicated to addressing the healthy needs of Baltimore’s Latino community. HL consists of a series of “charlas” (chats) and hands-on cooking classes (both conducted in Spanish) that promote cardiovascular health and overall well-being through diet and exercise. Classes are fun, interactive, informative, and provide participants with a longitudinal experience that focuses on integrating key principles of healthy living into the rich cultural heritage of Baltimore’s Latino Community. Activities are held at the Patterson Park Recreation Center, which hosts a number of community programs and services (Spanish-speaking karate classes, after-school care, etc.) Thus, many participants in the HL Program also attend other Patterson Park and recreation center activities on a regular basis. Bienestar provides all produce and materials needed for the cooking classes (which feature authentic recipes with a healthy twist) as well as educational materials and nutritious snacks for all charla attendees. The charlas and cooking class series is based on a curriculum written by Bienestar volunteers that is guided by American Heart Association and American Diabetes Association guidelines and recommendations.
