Benefits Information for House Staff and Fellows Leaving Johns Hopkins

Life insurance, disability insurance, dental insurance, and health insurance coverages will terminate at the end of the month in which your fellowship appointment terminates unless you take action to extend health insurance and dental insurance under the COBRA regulations or convert life and disability insurance to a direct pay basis.

Life Insurance

Your group life insurance policy may be converted to a term life or whole life plan within 60 days of termination. For important information on life insurance conversion click here.

Disability insurance may be converted to a direct pay basis with UNUMProvident within 31 days of termination. For important information on disability insurance conversion click here.

Health and Dental Insurance

Extension of health and dental insurance coverage in the School of Medicine student groups is offered for periods as defined under the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA). Enrollment for continuation coverage must be made in writing by completing the COBRA enrollment form no later than 60 days following the termination of your coverage. Postdoctoral fellows who are house officers at affiliated non-Johns Hopkins Health System hospitals, not covered in the School of Medicine insurance groups, should check with their parent institution regarding the possibility of extending coverage under COBRA.
