Medical Spanish Course Offerings

Medical Spanish Course Offerings for Fall 2011

The School of Medicine will be offering two courses for Medical Spanish in the fall.  Details for each course, including descriptions and registration information, are below.  Please read this information carefully.  Contact the Registrar’s Office at 410-614-4885 if you have additional questions concerning the registration process.

ME:800.710- Beginning Spanish for Medical Personnel

This class is for students who have never taken Spanish, or who have had less than one year of formal study.  Students enrolled in this class will begin by learning basic Spanish language structure and vocabulary and building appropriate phrasing and vocabulary to facilitate intake of basic information.  Focus will be placed on broad vocabulary acquisition as well as specific medical terminology.  As a result, extensive memorization will be required for successful participation.  Cultural competency concerns will also be discussed. 

Class will meet for on consecutive Thursdays, beginning 9/1/11 – 12/8/11 from 5:15 pm to 7:15 pm.  Location: TBA

 

ME:800.712 - Intermediate Medical Spanish for Medical Personnel

This class is for students who have achieved at least functional fluency in Spanish.  This course is designed to provide students with the specific medical vocabulary and terminology necessary to communicate with and help treat Latino patients with limited English proficiency.   The course will include specific vocabulary groups relating to assessment and care of patients, vocabulary to establish rapport, and discussions leading to cultural competencies.  The course will use pre-designed dialogues to review and learn vocabulary and grammar structures, as well as a workshop settings designed to put students into scenarios where they can use both their speaking and listening skills. Most of the course will be taught in Spanish and because this is an Intermediate course, students will be expected to have taken Spanish and retained basic conversational abilities.

Class will meet on consecutive Thursdays beginning 9/1/11 – 12/8/11 from 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm.  Location: TBA

 

 IMPORTANT REGISTRATION INFORMATION

 Medical Students and Graduate Students: Complete a Change of Schedule form and submit it to the Registrar’s Office.  Medical students will not receive elective credit toward their graduation requirement for this course.  The course will appear on the transcript with a final grade.

Medical and graduate students and post doctoral fellows will not be assessed additional tuition for these courses.

 

School of Medicine Faculty, Post Doctoral Fellows and Staff:  Complete a special student registration form at the Registrar’s Office.  Faculty and staff registrations require that approved tuition remission forms be submitted at the time of registration.  Each course carries 2 academic credits and the tuition amount is $2840 per course.  Please be aware of the tuition remission plan requirement that faculty and staff will be responsible for tuition costs for courses not completed (withdrawn from or dropped after deadline).

 Registration is limited for both courses.  The Registrar’s Office will notify you before the first class meeting if you are NOT enrolled and will establish a wait list at that time. 

 

Other Registrants:  Payment is due to the School of Medicine at the time of registration.

 Add/Drop Policy:   No adds or drops will be accepted after the second class meeting.

 Grading Policy:  These courses are assigned letter grades by the instructor.  You may not register for pass/fail or to audit.

 

Spring Offerings:  We anticipate the following courses will be made available for the Spring 2012 semester.  Details regarding registration will be posted when scheduling is confirmed.
