Watch the Tribute to Dr. Levi Watkins
June 5, 2009

Twenty six years after graduation in 1983, former medical students’ fierce dedication and gratitude to Dr. Levi Watkins was witnessed here in June when Dr. Watkins and the Johns Hopkins SOM were presented with a $100,000 scholarship contributed in his honor. After graduating its first two black physicians in 1967 Johns Hopkins did not attract black students to medical school until 1978. Then Hopkins faculty member, Dr. Levi Watkins, began actively recruiting students and increasing their numbers gradually. In 1983, his efforts bore fruit with a Hopkins graduating class of 14 black physicians, many of whom returned to campus over 2009 Reunion weekend to reconnect with each other and pay tribute to Dr. Watkins. The Class of 1983 paid tribute to Dr. Levi Watkins on June 5, 2009.
