Mary Ellen Avery, Med '52

In the 1950s, Dr. Avery's pioneering research efforts helped lead to the discovery of the main cause of respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) in premature babies. During her career in academic medicine, Dr. Avery had a strong interest in training young physicians, particularly in pulmonary disease and neonatology. She was a role model and advocate for women entering the medical profession. She contributed significantly to the field of medicine as a researcher, educator, clinician and administrator.

In 1960, Dr. Avery became an assistant professor of pediatrics at Johns Hopkins University and pediatrician in charge of newborn nurseries. Read more about Dr. Avery's career.

John Howard Yardley, Med '53

Dr. Yardley, University Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus of Pathology, was at 1953 graduate of the School of Medicine. He began his career at Johns Hopkins in 1954 as an assistant resident in pathology. From 1988 until 1992, Dr. Yardley concurrently served as Baxley Professor and Pathologist-in-Chief with John K. Boitnott. He was associate dean for academic affairs from 1977 until 1984 and director of the Department of Pathology from 1988 until 1992.

During his career, he established a fellowship program - now known as the John H. Yardley Fellowship in Gastrointestinal Pathology - to promote the research activities and clinical training of promising pathologists pursuing advanced training in the field of gastrointestinal disease.

For more than 50 years, Dr. Yardley devoted his energies to research, patient care and teaching. One of the founding fathers of the field of gastrointestinal pathology, he made groundbreaking observations on Whipple’s disease of the gastrointestinal tract and helped define the current classification system for neoplastic dysplasia in the colon and esophagus.
