Title: Sexual Sadism:  When Lust and Cruelty Merge
Abstract:  The spectrum of sexually sadistic behaviors extends from secret fantasies, erotic tickling, and "love bites" to horrific instances of torture, mayhem, and serial murder.  For over 100 years, clinicians and researchers have sought greater understanding of these behaviors without achieving much more than competing schemes of classification.  Dr. Dietz draws on psychiatric case studies, popular entertainment, surveys of college students and the general population, and empirical studies of pornography, the bondage/domination/slave/master (BDSM) subculture, sex offenders, and serial killers to support his thesis that the way one copes with offbeat sexual desires is primarily a reflection of character and values rather than mental illness.
