A Message from Rev. Uwe Scharf

Dear Medical School and University Community:

We had a good number of people inquire about the sources of Rev. Scharf's Invocation and Benediction for this year's convocation on May 22, 2009. Unfortunately, because of copy-right reasons, we cannot make the text available on this website. However, we are glad to share the references. Both the invocation (at the beginning of the convocation) and the benediction (at the end of the service) came from the same book:

The Soul Is Here For Its Own Joy: Sacred Poems from Many Cultures.  Edited and with an Introduction by Robert Bly, Ecco (An Imprint of HarperCollins Publishers), NY, NY 1995,

ISBN 0-88001-355-9

ISBN 0-88001-475-X (paperback)

The Invocation was: "Last Night, As I was Sleeping" by Antonio Machado (pp. 252-253)

The Benediction was: "Wind Will Blow It All Away" by Margaret of Navarre (pp. 228-229)

The Department of Pastoral Care at The Johns Hopkins Hospital is glad to provide Spiritual Support to the whole Hopkins Community, and especially to medical students, interns, residents, and fellows as they prepare for the important ministry of aiding patients in striving towards health and welllness in a holistic way. Feel free to contact us at 410-955-5842 to speak with a chaplain or the director of pastoral care about spiritual and emotional support needs for yourself and your patients. We are here to partner with you. Congratulations to everyone who graduated on May 22 and may the peace of God travel with you, wherever you go.
