Own a Piece of Hopkins History

Purchase tiles from the famous Hopkins dome and help put a new roof over the heads of an East Baltimore family.

One hundred sixteen years of Hopkins Hospital history have passed beneath the landmark dome, and now a limited number of its original roofing tiles are available for sale. Proceeds will help Habitat for Humanity transform a dilapidated East Baltimore row house into a new home for a low-income family and assist other East Baltimore community projects.

Opened in 1889, the original Johns Hopkins Hospital building hadn’t had new roofing tiles installed until a complete exterior restoration in 2005. A few of the 7" x 14" slate tiles that covered the dome in an overlapping, fish-scale pattern were saved.

These tiles not only weathered Baltimore’s summers and winters, they sheltered the founders of Hopkins Medicine—Osler, Welch, Halsted, Kelly—as well as generations of their successors, students, staff and patients.

Today, Johns Hopkins Medicine is offering these unique mementos of Hopkins heritage mounted in superbly crafted frames, each bearing a certificate of authenticity from Hopkins’ Alan Mason Chesney Medical Archives.

These limited edition tiles can now be purchased for $500. Funds raised through the sale will be used to further the tradition of Johns Hopkins serving the East Baltimore community and to restore a Habitat for Humanity House at 811 N. Washington St.—within walking distance of the dome.

TILES ARE AVAILABLE WITH TWO DIFFERENT FRAMES:
