Dr. Lahaina Hall certified as FACOG
Congratulations to Dr. Lahaina Hall on her certification as a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (FACOG).
To become a fellow, candidates must become certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG) and then nominated to the college by another fellow. Board certification involves a two-part exam, usually taken over a two-year period. The first part is a written exam, which is taken the first year the candidate is "eligible" (typically in the final year of obstetrics and gynecology residency training). The second part is an oral exam, taken the year after the written exam is passed. The oral examination is based largely on a collection of a year's worth of medical and surgical cases known as the "case list."
Founded in 1951 in Chicago, Illinois, ACOG has over 52,000 members and is the nation's leading group of professionals providing health care for women. Now based in Washington, DC, it is a private, voluntary, nonprofit membership organization.
ACOG works primarily in four areas:
- Serving as a strong advocate for quality health care for women.
- Maintaining the highest standards of clinical practice and continuing education for its members.
- Promoting patient education and stimulating patient understanding of and involvement in medical care.
- Increasing awareness among its members and the public of the changing issues facing women's health care.
We are really proud of you, Dr. Hall!

Introducing Dr. Davidson and Dr. Kirkner-Vourlos
We are happy to introduce two new physicians that joined our practice in August, 2011: Dr. Sasha Davidson and Dr. Denise Kirkner-Vourlos. Both are very well regarded in their prior communities.
Dr. Davidson joins us from the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C. She graduated from the Georgetown University School of Medicine and completed her postgraduate training at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. She has worked on multiple research projects with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Mayo Clinic, investigating immunogenetic mechanisms and vaccine response. She has received numerous awards, including the NIH – National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases National Medical Association Award. Dr. Davidson's interests include high risk pregnancies, particularly hypertensive disorders and pregnancy as it relates to neonatal and maternal outcomes.
Dr. Denise Kirkner-Vourlos is joining us from Capital Women's Care in Frederick, Maryland. After completing dual undergraduate bachelor degrees in Psychology and Biology, Dr. Vourlos received her medical degree from the St. George’s University School of Medicine. She completed her residency at the Newark Beth Israel Medical Center in New Jersey, where she received the 2006 Resident of the Year award and the 2006 Advanced Robotic Laparoscopic Surgeon of the Year award. She is particularly interested in critical care medicine and high-risk pregnancy. She is an avid cyclist!
