The Road Ahead
Frequently Asked Questions:
CONSTRUCTION - ACCESS AND SAFETY
Q: What will happen once the Broadway Garage and surrounding area are turned over to the construction firm?
A: On Monday, Oct. 24, our construction partner, Skanska Smoot Joint Venture, took over the property to be developed for the new clinical facilities. A construction fence will be erected around Broadway Garage and surrounding areas. Soon after, demolition of the garage and several facilities will take place. A concrete processor will be used to tear down both the garage (approx. 90 days) and MHL (approx. 45 days). The foundation work for the clinical towers should begin in summer 2006. The anticipated overall length of construction time is approximately 3 1/2 years.
Q: As a patient, what can I expect and/or what should I do, related to the construction?
A: As the Broadway Garage and surrounding areas are turned over to our construction firm, it is important that you pay close attention to information you receive from Hopkins before you are scheduled to visit and, once here, heed all signage regarding access and directions and follow any medical precautions that have been provided to you. If possible, patients and visitors should build in additional time for travel to their destinations or scheduled appointments. For ongoing updates, we encourage you to continually visit The Road Ahead online. And, we encourage your feedback. Please contact the Patient Relations Department at 410-955-2273 or write to jhmedicine3@jhmi.edu to express any concerns or comments.
Q: As an employee, what can I expect and/or what should I do related to the construction?
A: Employees' top concern related to the construction should be to look out for the safety of themselves and that of our patients and visitors. The construction zone should be avoided. It is important that you pay close attention to information you receive at work about the construction and its impact on the campus and our operations. Please pay attention to signage regarding access and directions. And, plan ahead for your travels on and around campus, building extra time into your schedule for getting from place to place. Ongoing updates on the construction, including parking changes and maps, are always available via The Road Ahead site.
Q: Are there any safety concerns related to the construction zone? How will the construction company ensure that patients and visitors remain safe?
A: Unfortunately, our construction efforts will cause noise and dust. As safety is our top priority, concrete barriers, protective scaffolding and fences will surround the construction area and directional signage will be posted. A watering process will also be used in the construction zone to control excessive dust.
The best thing patients, visitors and employees can do is avoid the construction zone and report any concerns to the Patient Relations Department at 410-955-2273 or write to jhmedicine3@jhmi.edu.
Q: What changes in vehicle traffic patterns will occur as a result of the construction?
A: As a result of the construction zone and the need to preserve adequate space and safety, there will be some changes to traffic patterns around the medical campus. These include:
- Jefferson Street will be restricted to a single lane and for vehicles traveling to the loading dock only.
- No parking will be allowed on Jefferson Street. All vendors have been advised to find other loading/unloading areas on Wolfe and Monument streets.
- One lane on Wolfe Street from Jefferson Street to Fayette Street will be closed.
Patients, visitors and employees are encouraged to plan extra time for travel to and from the Hopkins campus due to changes in access and traffic.
Q: What changes in pedestrian traffic patterns will occur as a result of the construction?
A: As a result of the construction zone and the need to preserve adequate space and safety, there will be some changes to pedestrian access around the medical campus. These include:
- The sidewalk and steps to the west of Phipps will be closed from the Wolfe Street Circle to Jefferson Street.
- Jefferson Street is closed to pedestrians. Only loading dock trucks are allowed.
- Sidewalks on the north side of Orleans between the new pedestrian bridge and Wolfe Street will be closed by the first week of November at the latest. Subsequently, the sidewalk to Wolfe from the garage on the south side will open.
- Employees who park in the Orleans Street Garage should not cross Orleans at street level, rather use the pedestrian bridge. If necessary, cross at Broadway to walk at street level.
- The door to the Jefferson Street building from Jefferson Street is now an emergency exit only.
- The existing bridge to Broadway Garage is closed and blocked.
- The existing tunnel to MHL will be closed and blocked.
Patients, visitors and employees are encouraged to plan extra time for travel to and from the Hopkins campus due to changes in access and traffic.
Q: I work in the MHL building. How will I gain access into it during construction? What about parking?
A: All employees are encouraged to sign up for parking in our on-campus garages, the Church garage or at one of our satellite lots.
