A Message from Dr. Felipe Andrade:
Dr Andrade’s work is focused in understanding at the molecular level the mechanisms involved in the process of remission in systemic human autoimmune diseases, through the study of patterns of gene expression using microarrays. Wegener’s granulomatosis and systemic lupus erythematosus are the initial models to address this goal. Another major research of interest is to address the pathogenic role of anti-proteinase 3 antibodies through the generation of an animal model of Wegener’s disease.  Finally, Dr. Andrade’s work has recently found that granzymes (the cytotoxic proteases that deliver the lethal hit during cytotoxic-mediated cell death) proteolytically target autoantigens as well as essential viral products. Understanding the biological consequences of this shared autoantigen/viral substrate recognition by granzymes is another focus of his current work.
