Joan Bathon, M.D.Director, Arthritis Center
Professor of Medicine

  • M.D.: University of Maryland
  • Internship and Residency: University of Maryland
  • Post–doctoral Fellowship: Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Rheumatology

Dr. Bathon’s research interest is focused on mechanisms of inflammation and joint destruction, particularly as they relate to rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and osteoarthritis (OA).  As a laboratory-based investigator for many years, her work investigated the molecular mechanisms of kinin-mediated activation of synovial cells, and modulation by cytokines.  Her current work is focused on an applicational or translational approach of knowledge accrued at the bench to the bedside.  She was involved in studies of the efficacy of tumor necrosis factor inhibitors in RA, metalloprotease inhibitors in OA, and more recently in other novel therapeutic treatment strategies.   Other projects include:  investigation of the effects of chronic inflammation on cachexia and cardiovascular disease in RA.  She is also involved in a large prospective study of risk factors and biomarkers for OA.

Dr. Bathon is the Co-Deputy Director of the Division of Rheumatology at Hopkins Bayview.  She is founder and director of the Hopkins Arthritis Center and of the Hopkins Arthritis WebSite which currently receives over 2 million hits per month.
