NIH eRA Commons FAQs

What is the NIH eRA Commons?

The NIH eRA Commons is a web-based system for applicants and institutions to participate in the electronic grant administration process.

How do I create an account for the NIH eRA Commons?

To obtain a user ID and password, complete the eRA Commons Account Request Form Return the completed form to Dezire Chaney ([email protected]) in the JHU School of Medicine Office of Research Administration (ORA).

After Dezire has created an account, the user will receive two notification e-mails from the NIH eRA Commons, one confirming the User ID (usually your JHED ID) and the other containing a temporary password.   To access your account, open the NIH eRA Commons homepage.

How do I get help if I have questions about the NIH eRA Commons?

When a problem occurs, help is available by contacting the NIH eRA Commons Help Desk The NIH eRA User Guide also provides helpful information.

When I view my account status and see “JIT” in the Action column, does that mean NIH has requested my JIT information?

Not necessarily.  “JIT” is an acronym for Just-In-Time and refers to the application timeframe requiring applicants to send information to the NIH only if an award is likely.  JIT Information includes up-to-date Other Support, IACUC, IRB, and Human Subjects Education Documentation.  When “JIT” is posted in the Action column of your account, it signifies that your application has completed the peer review process and has received a rank for which funding may be possible and it provides the link by which an applicant and an institution may upload the required electronic documents.  The “JIT” information should not be posted until the Principal Investigator and ORA have received a specific request from the Grants Management Specialist assigned to that application.

May I delegate access to my account?

Yes.  The delegate will also need a User ID and Password.  Contact your Senior Sponsored Projects Specialist in the JHU School of Medicine Office of Research Administration to obtain a User ID and a password.  Consult the NIH eRA Commons User Guide for details about the delegation process.
