The Johns Hopkins Main Emergency Department includes X-ray equipment in each critical care room, a stat lab and online computer access to laboratory and radiology results, as well as inpatient medical records. Patients are triaged by acuity of illness, and a highly trained and dedicated staff of nurses, technicians, social workers and patient advocates assists throughout the Emergency Department.

The department is staffed by attendings who are all emergency medicine-trained and board-certified, and by residents from the Departments of Emergency Medicine, Medicine and Surgery at Johns Hopkins.

The Department of Emergency Medicine has more than 55,000 acute visits per year and is a designated Level I adult trauma center, as well as the pediatric trauma center for the state of Maryland. Johns Hopkins participates in the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems that encompasses Baltimore City and five surrounding Maryland counties. The institute offers direct control and consultation services to paramedics in the field via radio and telemetry, and assists in facilitating transport to appropriate medical facilities by helicopter and ground systems.

The department includes the Cardiac Evaluation Center to facilitate immediate evaluation of chest pain patients and for rapid myocardial infarction "rule out."
