The Emergency Department at Howard County General Hospital includes 48 treatment rooms in three
separate areas or "pods" for urgent, acute and pediatric care
Consisting of 18 treatment rooms, the Acute Care Pods has special facilities for cardiac/resuscitation cases
and psychiatric problems
The Urgent Care Pod is designed to serve those with less serious injuries and illnesses, with 18 treatment
rooms as well as a central, open nursing team center.
Most children newborn through 16 years of age are cared for in the Pediatric Care Pod with a separate
waiting area and 12 treatment rooms, including one resuscitation room and two isolation rooms.
This pod shares a pediatric nursing center and support space with the six-bed inpatient/observation pediatric care unit.
The Emergency Department is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week by a team of physicians,
nurses, physician assistants, technicians, nursing assistants, admissions counselors, and support
personnel. Staff provides comprehensive, individualized emergency medical care using state-of-the-art
equipment and treament modalities. In addition, Johns Hopkins Medicine is available for consultation
on a 24-hour/7-day basis via telemedicine technology and on-site coverage.
Upon arrival in the Emergency Department, patients are triaged to determine the need for
admissions to the hospital, admission to the Short Stay Unit (SSU), or discharge.
Observation services provided in the SSU include the monitoring necessary to evaluate an
outpatient's condition or determine possible need for inpatient admission. Common diagnoses seen
in the SSU include chest pain, asthma, abdominal paint, dehydration, renal colic and syncope.
