Executive Dysfunction in Aging and
Neurodegenerative Disorders

This study examines planning, problem-solving, and other aspects of “executive” functioning in persons with amnestic and non-amnestic mild cognitive impairment. Patients and cognitively normal elderly control participants are studied with a battery of tasks assessing six domains of executive functioning. The ability of these tasks to predict impairment in everyday living skills and progression over time is evaluated through interviews with knowledgeable family members and two-year follow-up testing. The validity of our six-component model of executive control will be assessed with confirmatory factor analysis and similar techniques.
