Care of Nursing Home Residents with Advanced Dementia (CareAD) Study
CareAD is a prospective cohort study of hospice-eligible nursing home residents with advanced dementia sponsored by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke and conducted by investigators at Johns Hopkins University and the University of Maryland. The goal of the study is to describe the residents’ health problems and the type of care they receive near the end of life and to identify the type of health care decisions that are made for them by their surrogate decision makers and how those decisions are made. The CareAD study was conducted at three Baltimore area nursing homes using quantitative and qualitative research methods. Findings from this study will increase our knowledge of how to better care for individuals with dementia near the end of life and how to provide support for their family caregivers.
