P-STAR Program

Overview

The Psychiatry Summer Training and Research (P-STAR) program offers undergraduates interested in Behavioral and Biological Sciences the opportunity to work for ten weeks under the guidance of a faculty member at Johns Hopkins Medicine. Through one-on-one work with a faculty mentor, students gain hands-on experience in academic research and clinical environments. To provide in-depth exposure to Translational Psychiatry, especially that on schizphrenia and related disorders, we will have students work in both a laboratory setting and in clinical rotations.

Our program is designed to expose undergraduate students to a broad range of research and psychiatric care. Highly competitive applicants will be considered for this program. Students should be able to demonstrate academic achievement, relevant career objectives and personal motivation for research.

P-STAR students are presented with the unique opportunity to discover the comprehensive approach of Johns Hopkins University. Students will have the ability to shadow physicians at the Johns Hopkins Hospital Psychiatry Outpatient clinic and participate in clinical teaching rounds on the hospital Inpatient units. Students will also attend research seminars, participate in weekly-journal clubs and have personal lunchtime discussions with doctors involved in cutting-edge research.

Our P-STAR program is one of a kind, allowing students to experience both clinical psychiatry and basic neuroscience research simultaneously. Program participants will be expected to present their findings and experiences at the conclusion of the summer in a structured Power point presentation. P-STAR students are also invited to attend the Johns Hopkins Schizophrenia Center annual and national symposium on June 15, 2012 to gain further exposure to ongoing Schizophrenia research, and to network with science professionals in the field.�

Funding

Our program is funded by the NIH (P50 Silvio O. Conte Center grant: Akira Sawa, M.D., Ph.D., Director), and offers students a $3,000 stipend for participation. Travel costs may be subsidized on a case-by-case basis, for up to $200. Housing on the Homewood Campus is available for interested students.

Program Dates

May 29, 2012 - August 3, 2012. Students are bound to a ten week commitment, and are expected to participate full time, 40 hours per week, for the duration of the program.

Eligibility

• Rising college sophomores, juniors and seniors with an interest in Brain Sciences.
• Must be a U.S. Citizen, or a permanent resident.�
• Must be 18 years of age as of May 29, 2012.
• Must have proof of health insurance available.

Criteria for Selection

• Application: Please answer the following questions thoroughly in 500 words or less. Answer all questions in a Word document, and indicate corresponding questions and answers.

1. What are your interests in the field? Please include relevant work/internship, leadership and/or academic experience.
