Professional Interests

Dr. Zabel is interested in the transition of adolescents with developmental disabilities into adulthood, with a specific emphasis upon children and adolescents with conditions such as shunted hydrocephalus, autism, and Fragile X syndrome. He recently began a study to determine the usefulness of serial neuropsychological testing as a means of assessing shunt integrity in children/adolescents with spina bifida. Continuing studies involve the validation of the Kennedy Independence Scales - Spina Bifida version (KIS-SB), an instrument designed to assess executive functioning and specialized adaptive skills related to spina bifida. Additional research interests include the use of adaptive cueing devices to help children accommodate for working memory and prospective memory deficits.
