Geriatric Psychiatry

at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center

The Geriatric Psychiatry clinic is a component of the Johns Hopkins Bayview Community Psychiatry Program (CPP). The clinic offers outpatient services to individuals 60 and older who are experiencing memory loss, depression, anxiety, and/or behavioral problems. Treatment is provided by a professional staff of psychiatrists, clinical nurse therapists and licensed clinical counselors.

SERVICE PROVIDED

Comprehensive evaluation and treatment: Management of memory problems, depression, anxiety, and/or behavioral problems includes comprehensive evaluation and regular longitudinal follow up. The initial evaluation usually takes about three to four hours. Patients are encouraged to bring pertinent medical x-rays and current medication at the time of their initial evaluation.Follow-up visits will last for about 30-60 minutes and will include working with a therapist and a neuropsychiatrist. Steps will be taken to ensure that care is coordinated with the patient's primary care doctor when appropriate.

Consultations: Geriatric Psychiatry clinic also provides consultation service. A comprehensive consultation evaluation may take 2-3 visits over a period 1-2 months.

Hospitalizations: Psychiatric hospitalization may be sometimes necessary. The Geriatric Psychiatry clinic has a close affiliation with the inpatient geriatric psychiatry unit at The Johns Hopkins Hospital.

CLINIC STAFF

The Geriatric Psychiatry clinic is staffed by an interdisciplinary team composed of psychiatrists, registered nurse therapists and licensed counselors. In addition, the team also works closely with the Hopkins case management and physical rehabilitation services.

COST OF OUTPATIENT VISITS

Medicare, Medicaid and many other commercial insurance plans are accepted. Verification of all private insurance must be made prior to an appointment being scheduled. When applicable, co-payments are expected at the time of service.
